How discount calculations work

A discount is a percentage reduction applied to an original price. The formula is straightforward: Savings = Price × (Discount% ÷ 100), and Final Price = Price − Savings. While the maths is simple, doing it mentally under time pressure — at a checkout, during a flash sale, or while comparing competing offers — is surprisingly easy to get wrong. That is where this tool helps.

Two modes in one tool

  • Price + discount% → savings and final price. The classic use case: you see a "30% off" tag and want to know exactly what you will pay and how much you are saving before you commit.
  • Original price + sale price → % off. Useful when a retailer shows two prices but not the percentage, letting you compare deals across different stores or product categories on equal footing.

Practical examples

A $250 jacket at 35% off saves $87.50, giving a final price of $162.50. A TV listed at $899 marked down to $699 is 22.25% off. The You save figure is displayed prominently so the most useful number is always the first thing you see, not buried in the arithmetic.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate the final price after a discount?

Enter the original price and the discount percentage. The calculator multiplies the price by the discount rate to find the amount saved, then subtracts it from the original price to give you the final sale price. For example, 20% off $120 saves you $24, leaving a final price of $96.

How do I find the percentage off between two prices?

Switch to the "% off from prices" tab, enter the original price and the sale price. The tool divides the difference by the original price and multiplies by 100. For example, an item that dropped from $80 to $60 is 25% off.

Does this work with any currency?

Yes. The calculator works with plain numbers, so it is currency-agnostic — enter USD, EUR, GBP, INR, or any denomination and the maths is identical. Results are rounded to two decimal places.
